Teaching Your Dog to Sit
What you’ll need
- Some treats.
- Your dog.
- Patients.
To start with find a quiet space, now take a treat and place it on the end of the dogs nose but don’t give it to them yet just let them smell the treat to gain some interest.
Next raise the treat above the dogs head forcing them to look up, at this point the dog will usually sit. As soon as the dog places themselves in the sit position release the treat and praise the dog.
Repeat the process several times, the dog will start to respond quicker and offer the sit position, once the dog has performed the behaviour a few times start bringing in the command “sit” to associate the new behaviour to a command. As soon as you feel the dog is understanding what you want, start keeping the treat a little further away and higher. Then start to remove the hand and treat altogether.
Once you are at a point where the dog is performing the behaviour without help, start to gradually move away from the dog and give the command at a slight distance this will create a stronger behaviour and give you a command that works at a distance as well as next to the dog. All dog training Leicester involves building up behaviors.
Problems
My dog is raising up to the treat instead of sitting
In this case move the treat closer to the dogs nose and very slowly raise it above the head and allow the nose to follow, this should make the find the sit position.
My dog doesn’t like treats
In this case your treats are probably not tempting enough, try things like meat or cheese.
